Welch Wins Nail Biter

Welch College                         72

Trinity Baptist College           71

November 2, 2013.  Testing the character of a team usually doesn’t happen as quickly as 24 hours, but that was the case Saturday as the Flames won a nail biter over Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.

Welch went back and forth with the TBC throughout most of the game, but found themselves down 71-64 with three minutes remaining in the game.  From there, the Flames employed a stifling defense that didn’t allow another Eagle basket while scoring the final eight points of the game to take the win.

Carson Outlaw had a huge game for the Flames, scoring 26 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.  Jeff Carter had his second double-digit game with 12 points and Tim Hutchinson added 11.  Lim Chol just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

“We really showed poise down the stretch today,” said Coach Nathan Willhite.  “Sometimes when you are young and struggle through a game like we did yesterday, it is hard to come back and play well the next game.  But we did and I am really proud of them.

Now, 1-1, the Flames have their home opener on Friday at 8:00pm.

November 1, 2013.  The Flames traveled to Clearwater, Florida, for their season opener and came up short, losing 96-48.  The Cougars led from start to finish in the lopsided contest.

Leading the way for Welch College was David Reeves with 15 points.  Jeff Carter chipped in with 10.  Tim Hutchinson led the Flames with 12 rebounds.

“We knew we were going to take our lumps early in the season,” said Flames’ coach Nathan Willhite.  “We will just continue to work hard and try not to get discouraged.

Welch Negotiating Sale of Campus to Aquinas

Welch College Negotiating Sale of Campus to Aquinas

NASHVILLE, TN—Welch College and Aquinas College are in negotiations regarding the purchase and sale of the Welch campus located in the historic Richland-West End neighborhood in Nashville, according to Welch College president Matt Pinson. Both parties signed a non-binding letter of intent and are moving toward a contract which will await approval from the institutions’ boards of trustees. Both schools hope to close by February 2014.

While many details are yet undisclosed, the parties are negotiating a transitional agreement for shared use of campus facilities. Plans call for the acquisition and transition for Welch and Aquinas to take 18 months, including a year when both colleges will occupy portions of the Welch campus property while Welch builds the first phase of its new campus in Gallatin.

In June 2014, Aquinas will renovate and occupy four buildings on the current Welch campus. Welch will maintain occupancy of the remainder of the campus buildings until August 2015, when Aquinas will occupy the total campus.

The presidents of Aquinas and Welch met with representatives of the Richland-West End Neighborhood Association (RWENA) on Tuesday, October 15, to discuss the benefits of an Aquinas campus to the Richland-West End neighborhood.

Welch College President Matt Pinson said, “Welch College has enjoyed an excellent, mutually beneficial relationship with its neighbors. Maintaining this relationship with the neighborhood and staying within the zoning is of uppermost importance to both schools. Aquinas will definitely continue to be the good neighbor Welch has been.”

The proposed sale would allow Welch College to begin construction on a new campus at its 66-acre site in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Welch acquired the new campus site in the fall of 2008. The size and layout of the site allows for campus growth, permits building outdoor sports facilities for students, and provides adequate parking for students, staff, and guests. It is a short 26-minute drive from the college’s current location.

Debbie Mouser Named Enrollment Services Director

Debbie Mouser, who has served as the interim director of enrollment services for the past year, has been named Director of Enrollment Services, according to President Matt Pinson.

Mrs. Mouser joined the Welch College staff in 2010 as office manager/enrollment counselor for Enrollment Services and took the position as interim Director of Enrollment Services in the fall of 2012. She has also served as the College Choir pianist since 2008.

President Pinson said, “Debbie Mouser, with her background in sales, her deep, abiding love for her alma mater, and being a parent of two Welch College students, brings a wonderful perspective to the recruitment and retention of students for Welch. She is doing a stellar job in this role, and it’s only fitting that she assume the full role of director.”

Mrs. Mouser said, “I am thankful to have been given this opportunity and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I am blessed to work with a team that is passionate about the mission of Welch College and seeing our student body grow.”

Her Enrollment Services team is made up of Enrollment Counselor Daniel Armstrong, Director of Recruitment Nathan Willhite, Office Assistant Stephanie McVay, and several students who work in the call center.

Preaching Team Travels to North Carolina

Seven Welch College Ministerial students traveled to Eastern North Carolina September 7-8 to preach and represent the college in area churches, according to Christian Service Director John Murray.

The group left campus around 2:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, to preach in churches belonging to North Carolina’s Coastal, Palmer, and Pamlico Associations. Mr. Murray said, “We were blessed with wonderful weather, welcoming pastors, and receptive churches.” In all, the preaching team traveled 1, 538 miles and ministered in ten churches.

Several student-preachers commented on the experience:

Mike Hollis: “God really used the service this morning. The people at Ahoskie FWB Church welcomed me and made me feel at home. Pastor Jeff Cockrell (Ahoskie FWB Church) was a godly example and encouragement. I praise the Lord for giving me the opportunity to preach the Word.”

Dustin Walters: “Every time I am presented with an opportunity to share Welch College, I consider it a true honor. God has used preaching trips like this to challenge and encourage me in my calling to ministry.”

David Dell: “It was a great privilege to travel for Welch College. God moved mightily during the service. The people of Peace Chapel FWB Church (Washington) were such an encouragement to me. I was blessed to have a wonderful church for my first preaching trip.”

Stephen Bozeman: “I had the privilege of being at Cove City FWB Church with Pastor Bobby Brogan. It is a great experience to see what is happening in different areas of our denomination.”

Cody Balfour: “I’m thankful to have gone on this preaching trip. Through the preaching of God’s Word, Christ is lifted up. The people at Cardinal Village FWB Church (Jacksonville) were gracious and attentive.”

Mr. Murray said, “These men are always exited about preaching God’s Word. I am encouraged about the future of the Free Will Baptist denomination when I experience the hearts of these young men and their ability to communicate God’s Word.”
