Hi Mrs. Laura Thigpen, wife of Welch College President Emeritus Charles A. Thigpen, died last evening in Macon, Georgia. Mrs. Thigpen had been hospitalized earlier with COVID-19. She was 94 years of age. Please continue to pray for Dr. Thigpen who is still in the hospital and their daughters Laura Cannon, Ann Maines, Ruth Slaten, and daughter-in-law Yvonne Thigpen and their extended family.

  1. I posted this one another page, but wanted to post it here also:

I had Mrs. Thigpen for a literature class in the late 1980’s. I was carrying a full load of classes and working a full-time and a part time job. I almost always had done the reading and assignments. One day she called on me in class and I was unprepared. She went on to the next student and didn’t say anything about me being unprepared. After the class she called me aside to apologize. I said, “What for?” She said she knew I was working 1 1/2 jobs and also knew that I usually had my work done. She had a tear in her eye as she apologized again. I said, “Mrs. Thigpen, you’re just doing what a good teacher does. You don’t have to apologize. I should have had it ready for class.”

Welch College was blessed to have her as a professor for so many years and I was blessed to have her as a teacher. She not only taught literature, she taught life.
